The shelf price is not the price you pay
The classic trap for European visitors: in the US, the price on the tag is almost always before tax. There is no VAT included as in Europe. Sales tax is added at the register, and the rate varies by state and city (from 0% in a few states to over 10% elsewhere).
- Tax at checkout: a $20 item may ring up at $21.80 once tax is added.
- Tipping: in restaurants and many services, 15–20% is added on top. This raises the real cost above the menu price.
- Realistic budgeting: count the shelf price + tax + tip where applicable.

Cards, cash and exchange
- Cards rule: Visa and Mastercard are accepted almost everywhere. Favor a card with no foreign-transaction fees.
- Cash: useful for small tips and some businesses. Bills run from $1 to $100; coins include the penny (1¢), nickel (5¢), dime (10¢) and quarter (25¢).
- Decline on-the-spot conversion (DCC): when paying, choose to be charged in dollars rather than letting the terminal convert to euros at an often-unfavorable rate.
- Where to exchange: avoid airport exchange desks (poor rates). Prefer an ATM withdrawal with a suitable card, and decline the machine's offered conversion.
Frequently asked questions
Is the displayed rate live?
No. The default rate (1 USD = 0.92 EUR) is purely indicative and is not updated automatically. Enter today's rate from your bank or a reference service for a reliable calculation.
Why is the price I pay higher than the tag?
Because sales tax is not included in the displayed price and is added at the register. Depending on the state and city, it is usually a few percent up to more than 10%. Tipping is added on top in restaurants and many services.
Should I pay in dollars or euros with my card?
Always choose to pay in dollars (the local currency). The dynamic currency conversion (DCC) offered by some terminals applies a worse rate and hidden fees.
How much should I tip?
In restaurants, 15–20% of the pre-tax bill is typical. For budgeting, add that percentage to the listed price, then convert the total to euros with the tool above.
